CEO & Co-Founder

David’s work ranges from managing complex innovation programs to working in projects as diverse as DNA assembly, environmental remediation, and biosensors. His hard work has earned him a nomination as a Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine. He expertly leads FREDsense in business and development growth and client satisfaction.

Emily Hicks

President & Co-Founder

Emily is a graduate from the University of Calgary with a degree in Biomedical Science. She has led diverse technical teams on the world stage, resulting in awards at Stanford, MIT, and more. She has been profiled in multiple Top 30 Under 30 lists and was recognized as a distinguished alumni for Early Career Achievement in 2019. Emily has successfully developed and deployed biotechnology products in the field and leads the Product and Operations team at FREDsense.

Robert Mayall, PhD

CTO & Co-Founder

Robert holds degrees in both Chemistry and Biomedical science, with expertise in synthetic biology, nanoscience, electrochemistry, and biosensor development. During his PhD, Robert received the prestigious Vanier award at the University of Calgary and was selected as one of the Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity by Johns Hopkins University. His technical excellence has been recognized with multiple research and innovation awards from academic and private institutions and demonstrated by contributions to over 60 technical presentations, reports, publications, and patents. Robert has developed a diverse range of sensors with applications in military, industrial, O&G, and water treatment sectors and is leading FREDsense’s R&D team.

Brooks Magnowski, P.Eng

Head of Business Development

Brooks is a Master of Chemical Engineering with 12 years of Sales and Engineering experience in the Oil & Gas Refining, Agriculture, and Mining sectors focusing on Water Chemistry and Corrosion. Being a family man and having a love of the outdoors, this fuels his environmental stewardship, and a fervor for water quality is no exception.

Board of Directors & Advisors

Terry Mah

Director

Terry Mah is a consultant that has been involved in the water and environmental sector for over 20 years, and is helping both private and public organizations innovate and grow. Terry possesses broad and global experience, especially around water, and has other professional experience from the cleantech sector.

Chris Morrison

Director

Chris Morrison has spent four decades in the water industry with executive assignments in Asia, Europe, and North America as former VP for Ecolab. In his last assignment, he ran technology development for the water group. Since 2017, Chris has focused on board and coaching roles for emerging and growing water sector firms. He has a keen command of the commercial/technical and practical requirements for an innovative project to be successful in the market. 

Karen Hanna

Legal Counsel and Advisor

Karen is a corporate/commercial lawyer, practicing for most of her legal career as concurrent in-house counsel for two technology-based companies. Her areas of expertise include commercial contracts, corporate finance, business law, stakeholder communication, corporate governance, and technology and software transactions.

Simon Batcup

Advisor

Simon is a business consultant focused on new business start ups and business turnarounds. He has over 25 years of business experience, working in a variety of industries including IT, oil and gas, warehousing, trucking, rail and waste management. Simon is well versed in a variety of business challenges.

Neil Frizzel

Advisor

​Through Neil’s role as a principal in a private capital group, investment and guidance is provided to both early stage ventures and established small and medium enterprises. He serves as a senior advisor to an acquisition fund, and sits on the board of advisors of multiple companies. Neil holds a B.Comm, an MBA (Distinction) and a LL.B (Distinction), and is a member of the Law Society of Alberta.

Noland Katter

Advisor

Noland Katter is currently a Corporate Finance Associate with Beringer Finance, as well as an active Mentor for both Comet Labs and Singularity University Accelerator programs in Silicon Valley. He has successfully engaged with clientele all around the globe, and has been actively involved with full life-cycle product management, development, and selling initiatives for the startup technology industry.

Tim Hodge

Advisor

Tim is a proven strategic technology executive with over 20 years of operational and advisory experience. Tim is supporting the next generation of tech entrepreneurs through mentorship and his directorship of Alberta’s A100.

John MacKay

Advisor

John is Executive Chairman and CEO of Mosaic Capital Corp. He is also a partner of Agcapita Partners L.P., an agricultural investment firm. He spent 11 years as a lawyer, and was a Partner at McCarthy Tetrault LLP in the Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions group, where he was involved with over $1 billion worth of transactions.

Raymond McCauley

Advisor

Raymond McCauley is a scientist, engineer, and entrepreneur working at the forefront of biotechnology. He is the Chair of the Biotech Track at Singularity University and a Co-founder and Chief Architect for BioCurious the hackerspace for biotech, a not-for-profit where professional scientists. Part of the team that developed next generation DNA sequencing at Illumina, where he worked in bioinformatics, cancer sequencing, and personal genomics.

Troy Vassos

Advisor

Troy Vassos has 36 years of experience in water and wastewater treatment process design, technology R&D and performance verification, and operations support & optimization. He co-founded NovaTec Consultants Inc and was involved with their R&D and project expansion into new markets around the world. Troy has then since gone on to work with Golder Associates where Troy has worked on more water solutions.
